2019 Bike to School Week | 2019 Bike to Work Week

Salt Spring & Other Gulf Islands

May 27-June 2, 2019

Now in its 8th year on Salt Spring Island, Bike-to-Work & Bike-to-School Week is coming up again! Co-sponsored by Island Pathways, the week encourages all ages to cycle rather than drive. This Province-wide event is facilitated by the GoByBike BC. Last year, over 50,000 riders in nearly 60 communities participated, with over 80 riders on Salt Spring Island. Featuring free breakfast stations for riders and bike rodeos at schools, register now as a team or individual and you could win fabulous prizes!

More details about 2019's events are in this great article by the Driftwood Newspaper

Why bike? Salt Spring’s Pedestrian & Cycling Master Plan states that: “Increased cycling activity is shown to increase well-being, improve the health of both individuals and communities, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to vibrant communities and a sense of place.” For each km cycled rather than driven, nearly 300 g of CO2 is saved from entering the atmosphere.

This year, there will be a greater focus in supporting Bike-to-School activities for children, building on great programs like Helmets for Life and RCMP Bike Rodeos. The CRD cites studies that show “Students using active transportation for their daily school commute see improvements in their physical and mental health, social development and academic achievement.”

Interestingly, a 2017 survey of transportation choices on Salt Spring Island found that we each take an average of 2.6 trips per day, whether by car or other modes. It found that a total of 6,540 bicycles (1,010 children’s) are owned by the nearly 5,000 households here. However, roadside counts of cyclists made in May and October from 2013-2017 rarely observed more than 10 cyclists/hour. We all have a long way to go, so get registered and saddle up!

Get ready, get set, and register again for Bike-to-Work Week 2019, this year running from Monday, May 27th to Sunday, June 2nd.

On Salt Spring Island, we've organised free breakfast stations to make cycling to work and school more fun, these include Monday at Islands Trust (8-9:30am, 500 Lower Ganges Rd), Tuesday at Salt Spring Elementary (7:45-8:25am), Wednesday at Fernwood School (7:45-8:25am), and Outspokin Bikes on Saturday (9:30-11am, 131 McPhillips).

Bike-to-School events will include free tune-ups, a bike circuit, helmet sales & bike safety swag.

May 31, 2018

We had so much fun this morning at Salt Spring Elementary, where probably about 40 students brought bicycles or scooters to school and enjoyed snacks, stuck stickers on their helmets, got free bike tune-ups from Sean at Outspokin Bikes, and cruised the cone course on the playground. They can't get enough of the playground loop and go around and around... Afterwards, we decided that next year, we'll focus on school events all week and spread them around the island. Thank you to all who helped!

We shared a great morning yesterday in front of Outspokin Bikes, celebrating bicycle transportation with great snacks and camaraderie. This morning, we'll be up in front of the Islands Trust office, by BC Hydro with a table to greet bikers. Happy trails~
